Challenge and Outcome: Packing & Accumulation Conveyor System for Grapes and other Fresh Produce

Wrightfield worked with a company based in Staffordshire to upgrade an existing operation for a packing & accumulation conveyor system for grapes.

The site was handling products such as grapes and other fruits, arriving in bulk from growers and suppliers without fixed weights. The existing setup lacked an effective way to manage product flow to packing staff.

Operators were working from inconsistent piles of product, which created inefficiencies, reduced throughput, and made the packing process less controlled.

Wrightfield designed a system to deliver product directly to manual packing stations in a consistent and manageable flow. This allowed operators to work more efficiently, taking punnets from the line, adjusting weights as required, and preparing them for retail packaging.

Once packed and flow wrapped, the next challenge was managing the boxed product. Previously, there was no structured way to handle output before palletising, leading to potential bottlenecks and disorganisation.

To address this, Wrightfield implemented an accumulation conveyor system for packed boxes. This allowed products to queue in a controlled manner, smoothing the transition between packing and palletising. The result was a more efficient, organised, and scalable packing operation, improving both productivity and workflow across the line.
